In Mrs. Resomondo's class (science) we reviewed the weather instruments and fronts for the upcoming Unit Test. She used a variety of strategies to help the students remember the information. One particular activity she used was a weahter bingo game and a study guide. The study guide took extensive time to review. It seemed to be a difficult task to complete. Yet, some students would refer to this during their study for the Unit Test.

\nOn Thursday, Meredith and I co-taught a lesson to a math class about multiplying fractions. Meredith had an idea to implement some multipilatives into the lesson, but the teacher recommended that it wasn't a good idea. We next changed our plans to include the dry erase board. This seemed to be a better way to get our point across to such a large class. Our lesson was a lecture lesson about multiplying fractions by use of multiple methods. For example, we shared the concept of multiplying fractions within a rectrangle(s). Some of the students seemed to understand. Overall, I felt our lesson wasn't very effective due to; time contraints, differences in our teaching styles, and a lack of interest by most students. I feel this is an area I will need to improve upon in the near future.

\nFriday, Meredith and I led the Focus Group for Social Studies. Our handout was all about the terra cotta warriors. The handout began with a short two page text covering the story of the warriors. The following pages had several questions on it. Questions included multiple choice, short answer, and matching. All of the questions were mostly formatted to asses student's reading comprehension level. Focus Group's goal is to improve Literacy\/Reading for 6th grade. This lesson really taught itself. Most of the students read for about 20 minutes and the remainder of the class was spent answering questions. Meredith and I followed up the handout with some recall questions. We asked one inference quesiton about the paint on the soliders fading. This lesson was an effective lesson, I was glad to be a part of this.

\nThe rest of my week went pretty well. Most of the students were very chatty this pre-holiday week. My experience was a very real experience. I was exposed to many things I had heard about yet had never exposed to in my prior practicums. I feel my time at Gresham was a big learning experience in achieveing my goals as a future teacher.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"46861604","body":"Wendy, I am so envious that you guys got to lead things together. That sounds like a lot of fun! It sounds like you enjoyed the time you spend at the middle school. Can you believe how fast the time went by? I feel like we were there just long enough to get attached, then it was over. I don't know about you but I really enjoyed experiecing the whole day in the classroom vs. just the mornings. I agree with you that this experience felt more real. I too got to experience what real teachers do day in and day out. The students are excited and very chatty this week. I think they are excited about the holiday next week. It has been a slow moving week.

\nMy formal lesson was on Monday. I choose to cover information about thermometers. The lesson was to take place in the classroom and the science lab. During my first class, most of the children understood the concepts about reading thermometers. Second period was a challenge. My explanation did continue to become clearer for the students as the day passed on. Many of the students seemed to grasp the concepts of reading and interpreting meteorological instruments. Tuesday and Wednesday were filled with basic housekeeping of the classroom. We reviewed for the quiz with the students, prepared copies, and later grades quizzes. This was an informative day. I found it helpful to see a working grade book. I also read tests for the ESL students on Wednesday. Many of the students finished early, to my surprise.

\nOn Thursday, Meredith and I will be co-teaching a fraction lesson. We plan to implement ideas from our math wiki demo lessons and the math methods textbook. Friday we are conducting the Social Studies lesson to complete with the Focus Group in the morning.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"46485244","body":"It sounds like your formal lesson went well, I have mine tomorrow morning. Isn't it neat to see what changes you do when you teach a lesson more than once? I think that is a great experience! You sure have had a busy week, and it sounds like it will continue to be busy. That is great that you get to co-teach with Meredith. That will be good experience for the both of you. This week was filled with Spirit Week activities. Many of the children participated in the activities dressing up everyday. The activities made the children very distracted yet, I understand the need for Spirit Week. Following the first two days the students began to warm up to me. I am also beginning to remember a few of the student\u2019s names as well.

\nMy mentor teacher is an effective teacher. It is clear that she really enjoys science. I have observed her differentiating instruction for several types of learners. She accommodates ESL students as well, providing modified worksheets for them or reading tests\/quizzes out loud for those students. It was interesting to see how she accommodated the ESL students. My observations did bring up one concern about teacher focus. During the ESL readings etcetera the teacher was somewhat consumed with the ESL children, leaving the other children with little teacher support.
\n
\nOn Thursday my mentor teacher and I went down to the lab during planning time and set up all of the materials for Monday\u2019s lesson. Mrs. Resmondo had some good ideas on how to modify the lesson to better meet the needs of all students. During planning Mrs. Resmondo talked about the need to stress the importance of not dropping thermometers. Following our time in the lab we talked about the weekly lessons for the next week. I feel confident I can help her co-teach some of the content. I am familiar with meteorological instruments and proper reading techniques.
